During a crypto bull market, everything rises. But not at the same time, not at the same pace, and not for the same reasons. There's a rotation sequence that repeats cycle to cycle with enough consistency to be exploitable. Altcoin season isn't mystical: it's capital flow dynamics.
The Classic Cycle Rotation
Money enters the crypto ecosystem through the most accessible doors. BTC rises first because it's most liquid, most known, most accepted by institutions. Then capital seeks extra return and gradually flows toward riskier assets.
Historical sequence:
- BTC rises → others stagnate or decline relatively
- ETH and large caps → start outperforming BTC
- Mid-cap altcoins (competing L1s, DeFi, infrastructure) → take off
- Small caps and meme coins → final explosion, often cycle end signal
It appeared in 2017, 2020-2021, and partially in 2024. But each cycle has specifics. In 2021, meme coins (DOGE, SHIB) exploded before ETH season. In 2024, sectors like AI crypto had their own rotation. Use this as guide, not dogma.
BTC Dominance: The Central Indicator
BTC Dominance (BTC.D) measures Bitcoin's share of total crypto market cap. It's the most used indicator for evaluating where you are in rotation.
Basic reading:
- BTC.D rising → Bitcoin outperforms altcoins. Either market is in risk-off (all falling, BTC falling less), or BTC is accumulating while alts stagnate
- BTC.D falling → altcoins outperform Bitcoin. This signals altcoin season
Critical nuance: BTC.D can fall two very different ways:
- Alts rise faster than BTC → true altcoin season, active capital in alts
- Alts crash faster than BTC → general bear market, BTC.D falls because alts collapse, not prosper
Never look at BTC.D in isolation. Look with Total market cap to know if dominance drop accompanies overall market growth.
Total2 and Total3: Refine the Diagnosis
Two complementary indicators identify which market layer leads:
- Total2 = total cap excluding Bitcoin. Includes ETH, all altcoins
- Total3 = total cap excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum. Only altcoins
If Total3 rises faster than Total2, small and mid-caps are driving rotation — sign of advanced altcoin season. If Total2 rises but not Total3, it's ETH concentrating flows, smaller alts haven't taken off yet.
On TradingView, compare BTC.D, TOTAL2, and TOTAL3 charts on same timeframe (daily or weekly). When BTC.D falls, TOTAL rises, TOTAL2 rises faster than TOTAL, and TOTAL3 rises even faster — that's the cleanest signal of active altcoin season.
The Altcoin Season Index
The Altcoin Season Index (on Blockchaincenter.net) simply measures whether the top 100 cryptos outperformed Bitcoin over the last 90 days.
- Score > 75: Altcoin Season. Over 75% of top 100 beat BTC in 90 days
- Score 25-75: mixed market, no clear signal
- Score < 25: Bitcoin Season. BTC dominates
This index is simple and objective. Its limit: it's retrospective (90-day lookback) — it confirms altcoin season already well underway rather than predicting it.
How to Position Portfolio by Phase
Phase 1 — Early Bull (BTC.D stable/rising, BTC accumulating)
Overweight BTC and ETH. Alts still risky, macro catalysts first benefit major assets. A 70% BTC / 20% ETH / 10% selective alts portfolio is conservative and aligned with this phase.
Phase 2 — Mid-Cycle (BTC.D starts falling, ETH in motion)
Begin allocating to quality alts: established L1s, DeFi protocols with real traction, cycle narrative sectors. Momentum is diffusing. Rebalance toward 40% BTC / 25% ETH / 35% selective alts is reasonable.
Phase 3 — Altcoin Season Mature (BTC.D sharply falling, Total3 explodes)
Small caps and meme coins explode. Most profitable and most dangerous phase. Rotation arrives late-cycle, exit prices close fast. Begin progressively reducing most risky positions, lock in profits to stables.
Buying meme coins when everyone talks about them on social media statistically means arriving in the last hour. Liquidity of low-ranking alts can vanish in hours during reversal.
Spotting Rotation Start with DYOR
DYOR's ATH Scanner is useful for detecting sectoral rotation starts. When multiple tokens of same sector (e.g., L1s or AI tokens) simultaneously break new highs, it signals capital entering that segment.
Combine with BTC.D behavior: if BTC.D plateaus or starts declining while certain alt sectors make new ATHs, rotation has probably started in those segments.
Classic Pitfalls
Buying alts too early. BTC.D still rising, institutions accumulating BTC. Alts stagnate or decline in BTC value for weeks. Patience costs less than anticipating too early.
Staying too long. Cycle symmetry works in reverse on exit: small caps crash first and fastest, before BTC even starts falling. Having partial exit plan at euphoric phases is essential.
Confusing sector rotation with global altcoin season. Sometimes only one narrative (AI crypto, RWA, gaming) performs while rest of altmarket stagnates. That's not season — that's thematic rotation.
Altcoin season is neither guaranteed nor predictable to the week. But its signals are readable and mechanics understandable. Reading it correctly means avoiding buying alts when BTC accumulates, and selling them when everyone talks about them.
